The children had a wonderful week celebrating Matariki the Māori New Year. The children were split into whānau groups in the afternoon where they went with all different ages across the school and learnt about Matariki. The children learnt songs, made stars, made a feather for a school korowai, made lanterns and learnt about hangis. The week came to an end with a wonderful performance by Tahuna and Bayfield at a special assembly. Families also celebrated on Friday evening with a magnificent, tasty hangi. The food was delicious and the children and families spent a fun evening together.
A huge thank you to Reagan and Rhianon Hoete for their expertise and direction in organising and laying the hangi.
Thanks to the generous PTA for paying for the meat. Thanks to Grant McEwan and Countdown for giving us great deal on the meat. Kaans Catering supplies donated all the cabbage leaves. We could not have done the hangi without the support of Ty Cunningham, Oscar Smith, Jeff Williams, Geoff Markby and Hamish McDonald.
There were also so many people that helped with whānau groups, peeling, cutting and preparing vegetables and meat, making start biscuits and milo for the children as well as all the families generous donations of vegetables. This was such an amazing community week and we really appreciate everybody's support and dedication!
