Farewell to Robyn Parker

As some of our community may be aware, Robyn Parker, our School Administration Officer, will be retiring after 25 years of commitment to our school as School Secretary.  Over the coming weeks we will be working through the appointments process for this position as well as taking an opportunity to thank and celebrate Robyn's many years of dedication and service to our school.

Wintery Weather, School Closures and Late Starts

Although the image below may seem like a very distant memory or something that couldn't possibly be on the horizon, given our recent weather conditions, I am aware that these conditions could move into winter conditions very quickly in the not too distant future.  On occasion, schools may have a late start or closure for inclement weather, this could be for snow, ice or, in the case of last year, flooding.  Although at times the conditions around Anderson's Bay may not reflect the road conditions for some of the other major roadways in Dunedin, decisions for late starts or closures are made  as a "blanket decision" for all schools in the Dunedin area, taking into consideration the need for staff and families at schools to travel across the city.  Decisions to have a late start or closure will be notified on Classic Hits 89.4 FM.  As soon as we receive notification of a late start or closure an email will be sent to all families and a note will be put on the home page of our www.andybay.ac.nz school website.

Notification of Absence from School

As you will be aware it is important that we are able to account for any child's absences from school.  As part of our record keeping requirements for the government we are required to code and identify the reason for a child's absence or lateness to school. Can we ask that if your child is absent from school that you please leave a message, before 9:00 am, on our absences voicemail by calling the school office on 454 4413.  In this message can you clearly state your child's name, their classroom number and the reason for their absence, it is also helpful if you can leave a contact phone number, in case we need to contact you back.

Anderson’s Bay School Ski Trip - Cardrona 2017

Thanks once again for the support and organisation of Laurence Potter, who is currently looking at running the school ski trip to Cardrona this year on weekend of Fri – Sun 11th – 13th August. This is always a great weekend for families from Anderson’s Bay School, great for beginners, or those just keen to ski/ board with other families from within the school community.  Cardrona is a great family orientated resort, and this year has added bonus of the all new McDougall’s Express Chondola – a combined lift of gondola cabins & chairs, which will be a great benefit from those starting out on the beginners slopes, as well as providing a quick access point to the entire mountain for all skiers/ boarders.

The offer we get from Cardrona is open to school pupils and staff and their immediate family. The package is for the mountain only. You’ll need to organise your own transport to and from the mountain, and accommodation.

This year’s rates are as follows:

Lift/lesson/rental package

(Rates are per person per day. Under 6 receive free lift pass)

Winter Rates (up to Sept. 11th)

Thurs - Sun

Lift Pass & Lesson * (compulsory)

$60

Lift Pass, Lesson & Rental Hire

$80

* Please note that this School deal includes a ski/snowboard lesson per day.  The payment of the lesson is compulsory as part of the deal, whether you actually attend your lesson on the day or not.  The group lessons time is 8:30am to 10am approx.

If you require clothing hire: Full clothing (jacket/pants) rental $22/day.  Goggles rental $8 per day.

As lessons start at 8.30, it means an early start to get up the mountain. But the benefit is a full days skiing/ boarding, and car parking pretty much outside resort base.

At this stage we are just trying to gauge interest to see if we can get the minimum 15 people required to be able to go ahead with the deal – we haven’t managed to get enough together for Friday’s past few years, but have always had the numbers for Sat/Sun.  So if you could please email, and let me know how many in your potential party, which days, or indeed if your have any other questions. It would be great if we could have some feedback on interest by mid June.

If anyone is keen they are more than welcome to look at organising a second weekend as well?

Many thanks, Laurence Potter

Anderson's Bay School Carpark

Over time we have noticed some "near miss" situations with vehicles, children and adults entering and leaving the Anderson's Bay School Staff car park and bottom car park adjacent to the recently closed Anderson's Bay School Playcentre.  After monitoring these ongoing issues the Board of Trustees has made the decision to close these carpark areas to general use, with the exception of emergencies, during the hours of 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.  From Monday 15 May these car park areas will be dedicated to staff and authorised vehicles only.  Should you be in a situation, such as a need for close mobility access, please contact the school office for an authorised vehicle label.

Not only will this ensure improved Health and Safety practices, but it will also free up street-side parking spaces, with staff cars parked off the street.  As a school we are very aware of the limited parking and drop off areas along Jeffery Street.  Below is a diagram of alternative parking options around our school (provided they are free of roadworks).  The Board of Trustees do appreciate the understanding and commitment of our families to create the safest environment possible.

Anderson's Bay School Policy and Procedure Review

As part of the ongoing review processes of the Board of Trustees, all policies and procedures are reviewed on a three year cycle.  The following National Administration Guidelines (NAGs) have recently been reviewed for presentation to our school community.

Currently under review are the NAG1 Curriculum related policies and procedures.

Follow this link to view the policies and procedures under review.  If you wish to make comment on these please do so by contacting the school office, or emailing hamishm@andybay.ac.nz

Anderson's Bay School News Online

Recently our Anderson's Bay School Website has undergone some refinements and improvements, including the inclusion of a Video Gallery under the "Parents Info" tab.  Gradually we will continue to build our archive of school video links, including regular editions of the Anderson's Bay School News, presented, directed and constructed by our students.  Under the watchful eye of Mrs McDowall our children are learning the skills with creating movies using green screen technology, allowing a multitude of settings for our budding reporters to present from.  Follow the link to our video gallery to view first installment of our 2017 Anderson's Bay School News  (https://www.andybay.ac.nz/parents-info/video-gallery).

Anderson's Bay School Uniform

Adventure Outfitters (Princes Street)  stock all of the following uniform items for purchase:

  • Skort
  • Short
  • Pants
  • Cotton Polo
  • Zip Through Fleece Jacket
  • Zip Through Microfleece top
  • Sports Style Track Pants
  • Sports T-Shirt
  • Sports shorts

Given that we have choice and variety of uniform items, it is the Board of Trustees' expectation that all children in our school will be wearing the correct Anderson's Bay School uniform.  The only items of clothing that are non-uniform items are school shoes (which can be of any design) and underclothing for our school tops or skorts.  If children are wearing thermal tops or leggings under these items please ensure that these are either navy blue or black.  Over the next weeks we will be monitoring our school uniform, requesting that non-uniform items not be worn to school.  We very much appreciate your support and assistance in ensuring our school uniform is worn properly.

Anderson's Bay School Fair

It is fair year!!!! Our fair is on the 17th September, between 11 am and 2 pm. This is not only our main fundraising event for the year (this time working towards upgrading our shading and seating around the school) but also an amazing way to bring together our local community for a day full of fun!

We would love to have as many families participating as possible! You can get involved as much as you wish, as there are big and little jobs to be done!

Come and share your expertise, passion, time and fun with us! For more information regarding stalls and different ways to help please contact the PTA Fair Committee via pta@andybay.ac.nz
