Wintery Weather, School Closures and Late Starts

Although the image below may seem like a very distant memory or something that couldn't possibly be on the horizon, given our recent amazing weather conditions, I am aware that these conditions could move into winter conditions very quickly in the not too distant future.  On occasion, schools may have a late start or closure for inclement weather, this could be for snow, ice or, in the case of last year, flooding.  Although at times the conditions around Anderson's Bay may not reflect the road conditions for some of the other major roadways in Dunedin, decisions for late starts or closures are made  as a "blanket decision" for all schools in the Dunedin area, taking into consideration the need for staff and families at schools to travel across the city.  Decisions to have a late start or closure will be notified on Classic Hits 89.4 FM.  As soon as we receive notification of a late start or closure an email will be sent to all families and a note will be put on the home page of our school website.

Children's Toilets

Recently we have noticed adults using the children's toilets at school, particularly those situated near the hall.  For safety and privacy reasons please do not use the children's toilet blocks.  For the convenience of our adults that come into school there is a single, unisex, disability toilet near the school hall that has the sign "Adult" printed on it.  We would appreciate if you could please use this toilet.

Notification of Absence from School

As you will be aware it is important that we are able to account for any child's absences from school.  As part of our record keeping requirements for the government we are required to code and identify the reason for a child's absence or lateness to school. Can we ask that if your child is absent from school that you please leave a message, before 9:00 am, on our absences voicemail by calling the school office on 454 4413.  In this message can you clearly state your child's name, their classroom number and the reason for their absence, it is also helpful if you can leave a contact phone number, in case we need to contact you back.

Anderson's Bay School Policy and Procedure Review

As part of the ongoing review processes of the Board of Trustees, all policies and procedures are reviewed on a three year cycle.  The following National Administration Guidelines (NAGs) have recently been reviewed for presentation to our school community.

Currently under review are the NAGs 6, 7 and 8 policies, which relates to the legislative requirements and directions for Anderson's Bay School.  The Board of Trustees have also reviewed as an incidental review, outside of the normal review cycle, the policy pertaining to the prevention and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Follow this link to view the policies and procedures under review.  If you wish to make comment on these please do so by contacting the school office.

Kia ora Whānau,

We are excited about Matariki week next week (7 to 10 June). The children will be participating in a range of activities and your help would be greatly appreciated. If you can spare some time Tuesday or Wednesday 1.30-2.45 or Friday 11.00-12.30 please let your child’s classroom teacher know.

Some of the activities include flax weaving and kite making. If you have flax you are happy to cut and send along we would like this at school the morning of Tuesday 7th June, and we will need plastic bags for our kites. If you have spare bags please send them to your classroom teacher over the next week.

We will conclude our Matariki celebrations with a shared kai on Friday. Please send along a small plate of food for your child to share with their final whanau group.

Anderson's Bay School Family Ski Trip

Hi all,

Just beginning the planning for this winter’s Ski Trips for Anderson’s Bay School so am keen to see how much interest there is. It’s a fantastic deal and a great opportunity to try something new at a great rate.

The offer we get from Cardrona is open to all school pupils and staff and their immediate family. We are looking at the weekend (Fri/ Sat/ Sun) of 19thth August – 21st August. If anyone is keen on organising a second weekend as well they are more than welcome to – am happy to help out with this. Rates are slightly cheaper (by $12 per person per day) after 9th September.

2016 Rates:

There is a slight increase in cost again this year, plus Cardrona have advised they are doing away with the lesson only option (i.e. for those who already have a season lift pass) and it’s unlikely to be available next season. This season they will do a lesson only at $30 per person per day.

Lift/lesson/rental package

(Rates are per person per day. Under 6 receive free lift pass)

Peak Rates:  (until 9th Sept).

Lift Pass & Lesson * (compulsory)

Thurs-Sun $67

Lift Pass & Lesson * & Rental Package

Thurs-Sun $90

Rental = ski or snowboard equipment + helmet

* Please note that this School deal includes a ski/snowboard lesson per day.  Paying for the lesson is a compulsory part of the deal, whether you actually attend your lesson on the day or not.  The group lessons time is 8:30am to 10am approx.

If you require clothing hire: Jacket $11 per day, Pants $11 per day, Goggles $6 per day.

Siblings Under 5 (info from Cardrona)

Children under 6yrs receive free lift passes.
Children under 5yrs who are travelling as part of a family with school age children can not participate in school group lessons. Under 5’s are welcome to rent ski equipment at the NZ school group rates in which case they will need to be listed on the confirmation form, but will NEED to ski with their parents.
Alternatively, Under 5’s can be booked in advance to our fully licensed childcare facilities: the Cardrona Nursery & Ski Kindy. For more information, please go to

Please remember this ‘school trip’ is for the ski component only. You will need to arrange your own transport to and from Dunedin, and accommodation whilst in Wanaka. As lessons start at 8.30am it means an early start to get up the mountain. But the benefit is a full days skiing/ boarding, and car parking pretty much outside the resort base.

At this stage we are just trying to gauge interest to see if we can get the minimum 15 people a day required to be able to go ahead with the deal. You don’t have to book for all three days, you can choose 1, 2, or 3, as long as we get a minimum 15 people for each day. So if you could email and let me know if your interested and how many in your potential party, plus how many and which days you are interested in. Or indeed if your have any other questions. It would be great if I could have some feedback on interest by early/mid June.

Many thanks, Laurence Potter / 022 1600 515
