Paid Union Meetings

The Government has announced a proposal to dramatically change the way schools are funded.  Under the proposed model of funding Principals and Boards of Trustees may have to make trade-offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.

Schools are very worried that the global budget would lead to:

  • fewer teachers and larger class sizes
  • less job security for teachers
  • lower quality teaching
  • fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff
  • more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees

The Government's current funding review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to better fund education. NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from birth to year 13. They have asked all members at our school to attend meetings in September to hear more about the proposal and help determine the education sector’s response.

The meetings are paid union meetings, which means Anderson’s Bay School staff are expected to attend this meeting on Tuesday 6 September between 12:30 and 3:00.

We would ask for your support by picking up your children early, at 12:30 pm.  If this is impossible, please indicate on the tear-off form below, as early as possible so that we can make appropriate arrangements for your child.

Carparking at School Entrance

Thank you for all our families who have observed that the Playscape development area, beside our staff and bottom carpark, is restricted to access.  This is currently still the case. Please, can I ask that vehicles do not come into this area before and after school, as this creates an additional hazard to this construction area.  We are all very aware of the difficulties in finding carparks along Jeffery Street, however, I must ask that everyone observes the safety and parking guidelines around our school.  Only park in the  streets in proper parking areas, please do not park over driveways, near corners/intersections, or in the school gate entry area, not even as a quick drop off, as this endangers the safety of others.

Fathers and/or Significant Persons Lunch - Friday 2 September

Fathers and/or significant persons are welcome to bring their lunch to school and join the children (from 12:15 pm to 1:30pm)to share time with them.   This is a very informal gathering and you are welcome to initially go to the classroom, or if the weather allows, sit outside the MLE to have lunch.   You may then join the children in the playground, or let them show you around. If you would like to order a sausage for the 2nd September, please send your order ($2 each) to school by Wednesday 31 August, with your name and your child's room number.  We look forward to seeing you here.

... Competition, Trampoline

O'Mathalon Success

On the 16th of August, two teams of students competed at the O’Mathalon competition at the Edgar Centre.  One team was entered in the year 5 competition and one in the year 6 competition.  The teams competed against 30 to 40 other teams from schools throughout the Dunedin area.  The teams were given problems to solve within a given time, and the team that had successfully solved the most problems, won.  We were very proud of our teams because the year 6 team cam 3rd and the year 5 team came 1st.  An amazing achievement!  Well done Anderson’s Bay!

Friday Sausage Sizzle

The Year 6 children are fundraising for their camp to be held in December.

These are a great option on those cold winter days when it’s nice for the kids to have something hot for lunch. It also gives parents a day off sandwich duty!  We hope you will support our Year 6s in their fundraising efforts.

How to order:

Please place the correct cash ($2 per sausage) in an envelope with your child’s full name, class number and number of sausages required and post in the slot in the office before 3pm on the Wednesday.  You can also pay by EFTPOS.

Never have the correct change in your wallet? How about ordering for a block of weeks or the whole nine weeks? Simply place the correct amount in an envelope with the details listed above and stating which dates you wish to order for.

Friday sausages will be offered during Terms 3 & 4.

For fathers, and/or significant persons, who will be joining children for lunch on Friday 2 September, you may add a sausage order in by Wednesday, 31 August.

Wintery Weather, School Closures and Late Starts

On occasion, schools may have a late start or closure for inclement weather, this could be for snow, ice or, in the case of last year, flooding.  Although at times the conditions around Anderson's Bay may not reflect the road conditions for some of the other major roadways in Dunedin, decisions for late starts or closures are made  as a "blanket decision" for all schools in the Dunedin area, taking into consideration the need for staff and families at schools to travel across the city.  Decisions to have a late start or closure will be notified on Classic Hits 89.4 FM.  As soon as we receive notification of a late start or closure an email will be sent to all families and a note will be put on the home page of our www.andybay.ac.nz school website.

Notification of Absence from School

As you will be aware it is important that we are able to account for any child's absences from school.  As part of our record keeping requirements for the government we are required to code and identify the reason for a child's absence or lateness to school. Can we ask that if your child is absent from school that you please leave a message, before 9:00 am, on our absences voicemail by calling the school office on 454 4413.  In this message can you clearly state your child's name, their classroom number and the reason for their absence, it is also helpful if you can leave a contact phone number, in case we need to contact you back.

Community Notices

Calling all old Mobile Phones to help Sustainable Coastlines look after NZ’s coastlines and waterways.

After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale of unwanted old mobile phones it is time for a new multi award winning NZ charity - Sustainable Coastline to benefit from this scheme.

It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile phones you may have.

Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances.

Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the reception area at School.
