Thank you to Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation

We have recently applied to the Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation to assist us in adding further blinds to our classroom and MLE spaces.  During a recent survey of aspects that are impacting on our learning spaces and it was identified, for several, that when the sun is at certain pointsduring the day, we have insufficient coverage.  We also identified that this could potentially be a health and safety issue.  The Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation has very generously donated $3,500 towards this project.

Anderson's Bay Community Kindergarten

We are excited to be able to share the news that the Anderson's Bay Community Kindergarten will be moving sites from their existing site to the site that was previously used by the Anderson's Bay School Playcentre.  This is directly beside our school grounds and it will be fantastic to have this Early Childhood Centre next door.  We are looking forward to seeing their site renovations unfold and their eventual move into this site nearer the end of this year or beginning of 2018.

School Desks for Sale

Recently, as part of our continual modernisation of our learning environments, we upgraded the furniture in Rooms 5, 6 and 10.  As a result of purchasing new furniture we now have class, flip top desks that are available for purchase and would like to offer these to our community for a donation of $5 per desk.  If you would like to purchase one of these desks they will be available on a "first in, first served" basis.  Please contact our school office to secure your very own school desk.

Some Recent Illnesses at School

Recently we have had some cases of Chickenpox and Strep Throat presented by children at school.  Both of these conditions can be contagious and require exclusion from school, for a period of time.  Below are fact sheets from our Public Health Nurse Service regarding both of these illnesses.

Anderson's Bay School Crossings

As you will be aware we are very fortunate to have pedestrian crossings, providing safe crossing areas for our children to get to and from school, on Jeffery Street and Highcliff Road.  Occasionally we notice children crossing at places other than these crossings. Could you please discuss with your children the importance of using the crossing to help maintain their safety.

Recently, we have seen a couple of instances where younger children have rushed across the road without an adult or waiting for the crossing patrol to assist them in crossing.  Both Highcliff Road and Jeffery Street can be very busy before and after school.  If you are with young children please ensure their safety by making sure they do not rush out onto the crossing or road.

Wintery Weather, School Closures and Late Starts

On occasions, schools may have a late start or closure for inclement weather.  This could be for snow, ice or even flooding.  Although at times the conditions around Anderson's Bay may not reflect the road conditions for some of the other major roadways in Dunedin, decisions for late starts or closures are made  as a "blanket decision" for all schools in the Dunedin area, taking into consideration the need for staff and families at schools to travel across the city.  Decisions to have a late start or closure will be notified on Classic Hits 89.4 FM.  As soon as we receive notification of a late start or closure an email will be sent to all families and a note will be put on the home page of our school website.

Notification of Absence from School

As you will be aware it is important that we are able to account for any child's absences from school.  As part of our record keeping requirements for the government we are required to code and identify the reason for a child's absence or lateness to school. Can we ask that if your child is absent from school that you please leave a message, before 9:00 am, on our absences voicemail by calling the school office on 454 4413.  In this message can you clearly state your child's name, their classroom number and the reason for their absence, it is also helpful if you can leave a contact phone number, in case we need to contact you back.

Anderson’s Bay School Ski Trip - Cardrona 2017

Thanks once again for the support and organisation of Laurence Potter, who is currently looking at running the school ski trip to Cardrona this year on weekend of Fri – Sun 11th – 13th August. This is always a great weekend for families from Anderson’s Bay School, great for beginners, or those just keen to ski/ board with other families from within the school community.  Cardrona is a great family orientated resort, and this year has added bonus of the all new McDougall’s Express Chondola – a combined lift of gondola cabins & chairs, which will be a great benefit from those starting out on the beginners slopes, as well as providing a quick access point to the entire mountain for all skiers/ boarders.

The offer we get from Cardrona is open to school pupils and staff and their immediate family. The package is for the mountain only. You’ll need to organise your own transport to and from the mountain, and accommodation.

This year’s rates are as follows:

Lift/lesson/rental package

(Rates are per person per day. Under 6 receive free lift pass)

Winter Rates (up to Sept. 11th)

Thurs - Sun

Lift Pass & Lesson * (compulsory)

Lift Pass, Lesson & Rental Hire

* Please note that this School deal includes a ski/snowboard lesson per day.  The payment of the lesson is compulsory as part of the deal, whether you actually attend your lesson on the day or not.  The group lessons time is 8:30am to 10am approx.

If you require clothing hire: Full clothing (jacket/pants) rental $22/day.  Goggles rental $8 per day.

As lessons start at 8.30, it means an early start to get up the mountain. But the benefit is a full days skiing/ boarding, and car parking pretty much outside resort base.

At this stage we are just trying to gauge interest to see if we can get the minimum 15 people required to be able to go ahead with the deal – we haven’t managed to get enough together for Friday’s past few years, but have always had the numbers for Sat/Sun.  So if you could please email, and let me know how many in your potential party, which days, or indeed if your have any other questions. It would be great if we could have some feedback on interest by mid June.

If anyone is keen they are more than welcome to look at organising a second weekend as well?

Many thanks, Laurence Potter /  022 1600 515
